En la actualidad, la gestión de proyectos de construcción presenta muchas deficiencias en su modo de trabajo, propiciadas por la baja digitalización del sector, deficiencias que generan diversos problemas a lo largo del ciclo de vida del proyecto. La presente investigación tuvo como objetivo principal, proponer un plan de dirección de construcción virtual para proyectos de construcción, a fin de optimizar la etapa de diseño, mediante el uso de programación digital para automatizar software que usan tecnología Building Information Modeling (BIM), en el marco de trabajo Virtual Design and Construction (VDC). La investigación es de tipo documental, ya que se buscó generar conocimiento sobre un tema poco estudiado; y cuantitativa, porque se usaron variables cuantificables y el uso de herramientas informáticas para medirlos. Se concluye que un plan de dirección de construcción virtual, que fomenta el uso de herramientas tecnológicas desde etapas tempranas del proyecto, es fundamental para el desarrollo de la construcción virtual de gemelos digitales. La investigación demostró que, usando rutinas automatizadas con programación digital, para gestionar la información del modelo BIM, es posible reducir la carga de trabajo en el diseño conceptual, respecto del modelado BIM tradicional. No obstante, para el diseño detallado, conseguido con la compatibilización y constructabilidad del modelo, la carga de trabajo incrementa, debido a que la constructabilidad genera un “retrabajo” necesario de compatibilización del modelo federado. Lo mismo ocurre con la documentación generada, los planos de ingeniería de detalle requieren mayor carga de trabajo para el equipo de diseño.
